Poinsettia Bowl - What a joke!

Well we're all still alive, but a lot of us are rather wishing that the world ended today after a completely underwhelming performance from the offenses of both the BYU Cougars and the SDSU Aztecs.  Either the defenses were that good or the offense of both teams were rather, well, offensive to any football fan.

The first three quarters were a virtual 6-3 stalemate between the two teams, who couldn't find the end zone with a GPS if their lives depended on it.  Not even Bear Grylls could have helped them nor Mantracker could find where the hell they were, because they didn't appear to be performing at all.  And up to a certain point in the fourth quarter, the Aztecs appeared to be winning the turnover battle.

But then three key Aztec turnovers for touchdowns turned the game on its head.  An untimely BYU red-zone interception made the game look like the Aztecs' to win, but an untimely fumble in their own end zone, recovered for a touchdown by BYU linebacker Kyle Van Noy, blew the game wide open.  And on their next offensive play, Aztecs quarterback Dingwell delivered another fumble into the clutches of the BYU defense, followed by a 14-yard rush by BYU running back Jamaal Williams for the only touchdown scored by their offense.  Kyle Van Noy hammered the last nail in the coffin by returning a 17 yard pick for another 6.

Defense, combined with lousy offense, won this game hands down.  This game, aside from the timely touchdowns, was a dog.  What was even tougher to understand was how it was that an independent can even get a game like this, having a 9-5 record.  In the end, it was a demonstration of how much farther the MWC has to go before it can get some much-needed cred, without Boise State having to carry the conference on their backs.

Tonight, the Beef O'Brady's St. Petersburg Bowl pits the Ball State Cardinals against the UCF Knights at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg, Florida.  Which brings me to a couple of questions:  Who exactly is Beef O'Brady and what exactly is Ball State doing in this game if they didn't even do enough to play for their conference championship?

The UCF Knights are the Conference-USA runner-up, having lost to Tulsa in the championship game.  I can see why they're playing, but Ball State are ranked 2nd in the MAC West division.  Not sure if it had anything to do with the fact that the BCS-buster Northern Illinois Huskies are Orange Bowl-bound, but we'll see if their entry will bring another piss-poor bowl game.

Either way, I am hoping that this game will be far better than last night's game.
