Snap Judgments - Bowl Week 1

So far, 8 games have been played.  Out of those, one of the more entertaining games was last night's Little Caesar's Bowl, which ended on a questionable last gasp 4th and 2 conversion attempt by Western Kentucky.

Rather than go for an easy field goal to force overtime with 51 seconds remaining, which could have ended with a WKU win, they decided to go for it from the 19-yard line.  The 15-yard attempted pass went incomplete and that was the game.

There will be no questioning of the decision, since there will be a new head coach for WKU.  Former Arkansas coach Bobby Petrino's reign at WKU began after the game ended.  The decision to hire the morality-challenged coach is controversial to say the least, but it could turn into a bigger bowl appearance.

So out of the last 8 games, four of them were blowouts, including an under-classed Poinsettia Bowl match-up in which the San Diego State offense was destroyed by the BYU defense.  BYU produced three touchdowns with sloppy Aztec turnovers.

The UCF Knights easily took down the Ball State Cardinals in Florida, the Utah State Aggies made the Toledo Rockets fizzle in the Big Easy, and the SMU Mustangs stampeded over the Fresno State Bulldogs in Hawaii.

The Arizona Wildcats came from behind to defeat the Nevada Wolf Pack 49-48.  The Boise State Broncos continued the Pac-12 shutout with a 28-26 win over the Washington Huskies.  Louisiana-Lafayette got the Sun Belt their first win with a 43-34 win over the ECU Pirates.

Today's games will be a football junkie's dream come true, starting with this afternoon's Military Bowl (Bowling Green vs. San Jose State), followed by tonight's Belk Bowl in Charlotte, NC (Duke vs. Cincinatti), and to be wrapped up with a potentially entertaining Holiday Bowl in San Diego (Baylor vs. UCLA).

Leading up to the New Year, the games should become a little more interesting...
